RAKSHA BANDHAN: A CELEBRATION FOR BROTHER-SISTER BOND

 

Raksha Bandhan is an auspicious occasion celebrated all over our country to express love and affection for a sister or a brother.

This annual festival is celebrated in the month of July or August where the whole family is involved along with different sweetmeats. It is usually celebrated during the month of Sravana in the lunar calendar on the full moon. 

Rakhi is called as saluno, silono and rakhari in different parts of the country. It is also known as Rakhi poornima, Kajari poornima and Nariyal poornima and celebrated differently in different states of our country. 

This festival has been celebrated since ancient times. According to our Hindu mythology, in the  great Mahabharata, Draupadi tore her saree and ties a piece on Lord Krishna’s wrist to save him from bleeding out. In return, Lord Krishna promised to protect her whenever she needed his help. 

There are many other stories related to the origin of this auspicious festival like Yamraj and Yamuna celebrating this festival of Bhai dooj. 

According to traditional stories, rakhis are blessed with sacred verses that keep the wearer safe against all evil. Originally, rakhis were consecrated in rice and grass. The protection that a Rakhi can provide is for a year after which it is renewed again. 

The sister usually ties a pious thread called a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, while the brothers promise to protect them against all evil. The sister can also perform arati praying for a long, healthy life for their brother. 

Once the sister ties the rakhi, a mantra is chanted in Sanskrit to seal the ceremony and after that, the brother gives her sweets and monetary gifts. 

Before tying a Rakhi on the brother, the sister can also tie a Rakhi on the Tulasi plant and another on the Peepal tree to pray them for the protection of the nature.
